Rodrigues,Daniela Junqueira; Budiño,Fábio Enrique Lemos; Prezzi,Joel Alberto; Monferdini,Renato Pacheco; Otsuk,Ivani Pozar; Moraes,José Evandro de.
ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of the addition of the prebiotic fructooligosaccharide and/or alfalfa hay to piglet diets on carcass traits and short-chain fatty acid profiles in the cecal digesta. Seventy-two commercial crossbred piglets of both sexes, with an average initial weight about 6 kg and age of approximately 21 days, were distributed in a randomized block design, using a factorial scheme, which consisted of three alfalfa hay levels (0, 5, and 10%) and two fructooligosaccharide levels (0 and 0.3%). Fiber addition in the presence of the prebiotic exerted an effect on cecal digesta short-chain fatty acid, increasing the acetic and reducing the butyric acid concentrations. The meat quality was also affected by the...

Fish Immunology. The modification and manipulation of the innate immune system: Brazilian studies Anais da ABC (AABC)
BILLER-TAKAHASHI,JAQUELINE D.; URBINATI,ELISABETH C..
The understanding of fish immune system structure and function is essential for the development of new technologies and products to improve productivity. This is the first review on immune system of fish with Brazilian studies. Aquaculture in Brazil has shown massive growth in recent years due to methods of culture intensification. However, these procedures led to disease outbreaks, as well as the chemotherapy and the misuse of antibiotics. A viable alternative to avoid the use of chemicals and prevent economic losses is the administration of immunostimulants and prebiotcs, which act by increasing the innate immune system. In Brazil there is a lack of studies on fish immune system, except by some groups that have studied the effects of the immunostimulants...

Immunostimulation and increase of intestinal lactic acid bacteria with dietary mannan-oligosaccharide in Nile tilapia juveniles R. Bras. Zootec.
Levy-Pereira,Nycolas; Yasui,George Shigueki; Cardozo,Marita Vedovelli; Dias Neto,José; Farias,Thaís Heloísa Vaz; Sakabe,Roberson; Pádua,Santiago Benites de; Pilarski,Fabiana.
ABSTRACT In this experiment, the beneficial effects of mannan-oligosaccharide (MOS) on immunology and intestinal microbiology of Nile tilapia juveniles was demonstrated. Prior to this, three levels of MOS in Nile tilapia diets (1, 8, and 15 g.kg−1) were tested, and hematological parameters, serum lysozyme, and intestinal microbiology were analyzed. The fish blood was sampled at day zero (basal sample) and after 45 days of trial, and the intestinal microbiota was evaluated at the end of the experiment. After 45 days of trial, fish fed 8 and 15 g.kg−1 of MOS presented an increase in both aerobic and lactic acid bacteria numbers in their guts. The MOS feeding also increased the counts of total leukocytes, monocytes, and lymphocytes of fish, but a decrease in...

Impact of arachidonic acid enrichment of live rotifer prey on bacterial communities in rotifer and larval fish cultures ArchiMer
Seychelles, Laurent H.; Doiron, Kim; Audet, Celine; Tremblay, Rejean; Pernet, Fabrice; Lemarchand, Karine.
Rotifers (Brachionus plicatilis), commonly used at first feeding in commercial fish hatcheries, carry a large bacteria load. Because they are relatively poor in essential fatty acids, it is common practice to enrich them with fatty acids, including arachidonic acid (AA). This study aims to determine whether prey enrichment with AA may act as a prebiotic and modify the microbial community composition either in AA-enriched rotifer cultures or in larval-rearing water using winter flounder (Pseudopleuronectes americanus) as a larval fish model. AA enrichment modified the bacterial community composition in both the rotifer culture tanks and the larval-rearing tanks. We observed an increase in the number of cultivable bacteria on TCBS (thiosulfate-citrate-bile...

Prebiotic inulin: Useful dietary adjuncts to manipulate the livestock gut microflora BJM
Samanta,A.K.; Jayapal,Natasha; Senani,S.; Kolte,A.P.; Sridhar,Manpal.
In recent years, there has been a growing appreciation on the relevance of gastrointestinal microflora in both ruminants and non-ruminants owing to revelation of their role in several physiological functions including digestion, nutrient utilization, pathogen exclusion, gastrointestinal development, immunity system, gut gene expression and quality of animal products. The ban imposed on the use of antibiotics and hormones in feed has compelled animal researchers in finding an alternative which could overcome the issues of conventional feed additives. Though the concept of prebiotic was evolved keeping in mind the gastrointestinal flora of human beings, presently animal researchers are exploring the efficiency of prebiotic (inulin) for modulating the gut...
